Biographical or historical data
Joseph Riddle was born 5 April 1763, the son of James Riddle of York County, Pennsylvania. He attended Princeton University and graduated in September 1783. Riddle married Sarah Morrow Kearsley of Sheperdstown, (West) Virginia, on 13 September 1789, and by the following year he was an established merchant in Alexandria, Virginia. Shortly after her death in April 1810, Riddle moved with his family to Richmond, Virginia. While there he probably continued to pursue mercantile interests. He again moved to Woodville, Mississippi, sometime thereafter where he resided until his death on 30 May 1844.
