Biographical or historical data
William Andrew Jamison was born 31 January 1841 in North Carolina and attended Randolph-Macon College. He enlisted in Company A, 18th Virginia Infantry 9 May 1861 and transferred to Company C, 5th Virginia Cavalry 3 May 1862. Jamison captured 30 Union soldiers in the aftermath of the second battle of Manassas, gave the signal to start the battle of Chancellorsville, and led a charge at Brandy Station. Jamison was captured near Luray, Virginia, 24 September 1864. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 8 February 1865 (to date from 26 January). Jamison was released 17 June 1865 and settled in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, where he farmed. Jamison served as clerk of court for Mecklenburg County from 1887 until his death 29 November 1919.
