Biographical or historical data
William Hedges Hubbard was born in 1783 in Connecticut. He moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 1809 to manufacture boots and shoes. Hubbard's business venture grew and changed to become wholesalers and dealing not only in shoes, but in hats and trunks as well. He opened stores in Richmond, Petersburg, and Lynchburg. Hubbard suffered financial losses during the Civil War, but was able to pay his debts and leave a profitable estate upon his death. He had one child by his first wife Rebecca (d. 1831). Hubbard and his second wife Ann Phillips Hubbard (1793-1865) adopted a niece. Hubbard died in Richmond 25 May 1865 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
