Papers, 1795-1808, of William Munford (1775-1825) of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The collection includes an account book, 1795-1808, with both personal and business transactions. Some purchases include a coat, silk, shoes, and chickens on a trip to Richmond; attendance at an Independence celebration dinner at Bacon's Branch; a bill at Worsham's Tavern in Petersburg; and fees at Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Prince Edward County Courthouses. The account book also includes lists of expenses for items such as household furniture, servants, postage, books and stationary, living in Richmond, medicine, and taxes to the Sheriff of Henrico, among other entries. The collection also includes several pages of poetry and a short essay, n.d., in regards to the work of William Shakespeare. Also includes several drafts of correspondence, 1801-1805, concerning payment of a bond and the estate of Otway Byrd

Biographical or historical data
William Munford (15 August 1775 - 21 June 1825) was a legislator, court reporter, poet, and classicist. Munford was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and was the eldest child and only son of Colonel Robert and Anne (Beverley) Munford. At a young age Munford was educated at the College of William and Mary and completed his legal education around twenty-one. While still at the age of twenty-one, Munford was elected to the House of Delegates in 1797 and then to the senate where he served for four years. In 1802, he married Sally Radford, daughter of William Radford of Richmond, Virginia. Munford went on to become the Clerk of the House of Delegates, a position he held until his death. He also served as a law reporter for the decisions of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, for which he prepared six annual issues per year. Munford worked for most of his adult life on a translation of the Iliad.
