William S. Smith was born 6 February 1830 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia. During the Civil War, he served in Company K, 8th Virginia Cavalry and as captain of Company D, 2nd Battalion Kentucky Mounted Rifles. By 1864 Smith held an independent command in what is now West Virginia that ranged through the counties surrounding the Big Sandy River and its forks. Smith is probably the same individual as "Rebel Bill" Smith. Smith died 11 April 1903 in Huntington, West Virginia, and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington.
