Biographical or historical data
William Townes was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in 1791. He was a prosperous planter and lawyer. Townes owned land in Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas. He was a prominent supporter for Randolph-Macon College when it was located in Mecklenburg County. Townes married Lucy R. Maclin 27 November 1817 and they had at least six children. Townes died in 1879.
