Biographical or historical data
Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia, was organized in 1661 and was originally named Appomattox Parish. In 1664, the name was changed to Washington Parish to honor one of its first vestrymen, Colonel John Washington, the great-grandfather of George Washington. St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the successor to four earlier colonial churches, Appomattox, Round Hill, Bray's, and Pope's Creek, was constructed in 1848. Over the decades, the church has undergone substantial additions and renovations.
