Biographical or historical data
Francis Walker Gilmer was born at Penn Park, Albemarle County, Virginia, on October 9, 1790. Graduate of the College of William and Mary (1810), studied law with William Wirt (1811-1814), practiced law in Winchester, Virginia (1815-1817), appointed professor of law at the University of Virginia. Died before assuming office on February 25, 1826.
