Biographical or historical data
  • Thomas Lee Alfriend was born in Richmond, Virginia, 19 February 1843, and was educated in that city. From 1859 to 1861 he clerked with Ludlam & Watson and Shields & Sommerville. From 1801 to 1805 he was in the Confederate States Army, private for two years, orderly sergeant the remaining two years; was captured April 6, 1865, and sent to Point Lookout, and held there until 22 June 1865. The next day he returned to Richmond, and there he joined the firm of Thomas M. Alfriend & Son as a clerk, the business consisting of his father and elder brother Edward Morrison Alfriend. In June 1866, he became a member of this firm and remained a member until October 1879, when he started an insurance business in his own name. He was married in Richmond on 2 July 1868 to Eliza Sanger Manson, who was born in Granville County, North Carolina. They had four children: Mary B., Otis M., Sallie S. and Anna Lee, and buried one son, Thomas Manson, who died July 28, 1870, aged eleven months. Alfriend was a member of All Saints (Episcopal) Church, Richmond.
  • Thomas M. Alfriend, father of Thomas Lee, was born in Petersburg, Virginia, 10 November 1811, and died in Richmond, 11 December 1885. He was a son of Colin Alfriend, of Petersburg. The mother of Thomas Lee was Mary Jane Eger, born in County Althone, Ireland, died November 8, 1852, in Richmond. Thomas M. Alfriend was president of the Virginia Fire and Marine Insurance Company and later founded his own insurance company.
