Includes accounts, bills of lading, bonds, correspondence, inventories, promissory notes, receipts, and wills, mainly relating to Nathaniel Tinsley (1757-1834) and his son, Jeremiah Samuel Beckley Tinsley (b. 1813). Included are wills for John Bowe (d. 1809), Elizabeth Davis (d. 1748), and Lucy Tinsley (d. 1836) of Hanover County, Virginia. Also includes accounts and receipts for fabric and tobacco shipped from England to Virginia. Includes an inventory, 1748, of the estate of Elizabeth Davis, including information on personal property and slaves. Includes a division of the slaves of William Tinsley (d. 1809) of Hanover County, Virginia. Includes correspondence with family members who had located to Tennessee. Biographical or historical data
Thomas Tinsley (ca. 1618-1700) and Elizabeth Randolph (ca. 1620-1702), of New Kent County, Virginia, were the parents of Cornelius Tinsley (1644-1748) of Hanover County, Virginia. Cornelius Tinsley married Elizabeth Mary Davis. Their son, Thomas Tinsley (ca. 1705-1735) of Hanover County, Virginia, married Martha Ragland. One of their five children was Nathaniel Tinsley (1757-1834), who married Lucy Pate (1769-1836) of Halifax County, Virginia, on 24 June 1790. They had eleven children including Jeremiah Samuel Beckley Tinsley (b. 1813). The Tinsley family owned land in Hanover County, Virginia, and the homestead on Totopotomoy Creek in Hanover County. A branch of the family moved to Tennessee in the early 1820's.
