  • Papers, 1788-1856, of James Brown (1762-1841), a wealthy Richmond, Virginia, merchant and partner with Robert Rives in the Richmond mercantile firm of Brown, Rives and Company. The firm dealt locally, nationally and internationally in tobacco, cotton, corn, rice, and other crops and sundry goods. Principally contains accounts books, business and personal correspondence, estate records, legal files, and receipts including property tax receipts concerning Brown, his family, and his business associates
  • Correspondence principally concerns Brown's land holdings in Kentucky and Ohio, Brown and Burton family matters, legal and estate matters, and his business dealings from ca. 1790-1840. Business correspondence primarily relates to market prices, shipments, and payment for goods. Correspondence is principally from local, national and overseas merchants, litigants, and family members. There are also legal files and estate records related to the settlements of the Robert Burton (first husband of Anna P. Brown), James Brown, Anna P. Brown, Robert Burton, Jr., and Hugh Patton estates. These legal files contain accounts, ledgers, receipts, and often lawsuits regarding the liquidation of the mercantile firms owned by these persons including the firm of Brown, Rives and Company

Biographical or historical data
The Brown's were a family of successful merchants and resided in Scotland, and Lynchburg and Richmond, Virginia. William Brown (1765-1811) and John Brown (d. 1801) were merchants like their brother James. Their father James Brown was married to Margaret Burnie and resided in Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
