It has belonged to the districts of Petersburg, Randolph-Macon, and Murfreesboro, and has included churches in Southampton and Sussex Counties, Virginia and Hertford County, North Carolina. These churches are: Applewhite's, Barnes, Boykins, Clarksbury, Mt. Horeb, Newsoms, Nottoway Chapel, Peete's, Person's, Union, Vicks, and Whitehead's in Southampton County; Forts, Indian Spring, Jarrat's Chapel, Lebanon, and Mabry's in Sussex County; and New Hope in Hertford County, North Carolina. In 1874, the circuit was split into Southampton and North Southampton with the Meherrin River acting as the dividing line.
