Biographical or historical data
Spotsylvania County was formed in 1720 from Essex, King and Queen, and King William Counties. The entire county was located in one parish, St. George's Parish, which was formed in Essex County in 1714 for the German Protestant settlers at Germanna. Between 1718 and 1721, the Germans left Germanna for land ten miles higher in what is now Fauquier County, abandoning the parish. The parish was then organized as a unit of the Established Church. For more information see these two volumes: A HISTORY OF ST. GEORGE'S PARISH IN THE COUNTY OF SPOTSYLVANIA AND DIOCESE OF VIRGINIA, by the Reverend Philip Slaughter, 1847 (a later edition was edited and published by R.A. Brock in 1890); and THE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF ST. GEORGE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA, by Carrol H. Quenzel, 1951.
