Biographical or historical data
John A. Wharton was born around 1803, the son of John and Sallie Wharton. Active in the commmunity, he was an attorney, minister, judge, banker, and Superintendent of Schools in Bedford County, Virginia. In 1840, he became the first mayor of Liberty, Virginia and served until 1849. He was rector of St. John's Church and was instrumental in the founding of St. Thomas' Church. In 1871, Wharton became judge of the Bedford County Court. He married Isabella Brown and was the father of Lyman Brown Wharton. He died in 1888.
