The Resource (microform)

Virginia index cards compiled by Adelaide Rosalia Hasse (1868-1953) of the New York Public Library as part of a series entitled INDEX OF ECONOMIC MATERIALS IN DOCUMENTS OF THE STATES OF THE UNITED STATES which primarily indexed economic topics like agriculture, banks, education, industry, internal improvements, public works, railroads, rivers and waterways, roads, ships, tariffs, taxes, transportation, and other matters within printed official state materials. Cards consist of four series: Series I: manuscript cards, edited, which served as drafts for typed cards and include some subjects missing from typed entries; Series II: typed index cards filed by subject, then chronologically, with sources primarily Virginia House and Senate journals and governor's messages; Series III: manuscript index cards to the annual reports 1-39, 41, of the Board of Public Works, 1816-1855, 1859, filed chronologically; and Series IV: manuscript cards, some by topic, but in an undetermined arrangement and from an undetermined source. The project was sponsored by the Department of Economics and Sociology of the Carnegie Institution. Sixteen volumes were published for thirteen states, but Virginia was not one of those states. The index cards for the unpublished indexes were sent to the South Carolina State Archives which then disposed of those sets not relating to South Carolina
