Meherrin Parish was formed in 1754 when St. Andrew's Parish, Brunswick County, was divided. The portion on the south side of the Meherrin River was named Meherrin Parish, while the portion on the north side of the river retained the name St. Andrew's Parish. Both parishes were in Brunswick County until 1781 when the county was divided by a vertical line and the territory east of the line became Greensville County.
