Summary
Records, 1865-1869, of the US Army, Department of Virginia. Includes routine correspondence and documents (reports of inspections, inventories, orders, discharge papers, rolls, etc.) generated by the Department and its offices, particularly the District of Central Virginia and Sub-District of South Anna. Included are materials relating to occupying Union forces in Virginia, particularly the 67th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers and correspondence and documents of Provost Marshals (certificates of oath of allegiance issued to various persons in Virginia, claims for damage done by the Union forces, petitions, affairs of former slaves, etc.). Also included is Department's correspondence with the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands

Biographical or historical data
The Department of Virginia was separated from the Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina on 18 January 1865. On 19 April 1865 it was attached to the Division of the James. Upon the capture of Richmond, this city became the Department's headquarters. On 27 June 1865, the Deptartment was attached to the Division of the Atlantic, and on 6 August 1866 merged into the Deptartment of the Potomac. On 11 March 1867 it was reorganized as part of the First Military District. In 29 January 1870 the District was merged into the Department of Virginia.
