Drawing scrapbooks, 1864-1878, of John Douglas Woodward (1846-1924) consisting of drawings and sketches completed in the 1870s and 1880s which include those used in several publications. There are seven volumes of these drawings, mounted in scrapbooks, as follows: Virginia, Southern States, Eastern States; and those used in publications: PICTURESQUE AMERICA, PACIFIC RAILROADS and COLORADO, PICTURESQUE PALESTINE, and the HOLY LAND. There are two descriptive lists, including the subject, date, medium (other than pencil), paper size, and color, at the beginning of each reel

Biographical or historical data
John Douglas Woodward, illustrator and landscape artist, was born on July 12, 1846 in Middlesex County, Virginia. The family moved to Kentucky in 1849 and to Canada in 1862, during the Civil War, finally settling in Richmond, Virginia, after the war. Woodward studied art in Cincinnati and at the Cooper Institute in New York City. He married Maria Louise Symmons of New York City in 1875, and settled in New Rochelle, New York, in 1905. Woodward's nephew, the Reverend Edmund Lee Woodward, was the builder and director of Shrine Mont, an Episcopal retreat center, and Art Hall, one of the buildings on the property, is dedicated to John Woodward and holds many of his paintings.
