Summary
Papers, 1750-1834, of Adam Stephen (1718-1791) concerning Stephen's participation in the French and Indian and the Revolutionary Wars, and his interest in obtaining western land grants. There are two letters from Governor Dinwiddie (October 5, 1754, and March 7, 1755) and several other letters relating to a gun factory at Martinsburg, managed by Anthony Nobel during the early years of the Revolution. Nobel traveled to Williamsburg several times, discussed the production of his factory with the Council and sold guns on two or three occasions to the Virginia government. One of the letters describes the operation of the gun factory and the number of men employed in various parts of the gun-making process
