Summary
Papers, 1828-1870, principally consisting of the military papers and personal correspondence of Shenandoah County resident Benjamin Stickley (1806-1853), an officer of the 136th Regiment, Virginia Militia. The military papers, 1828-1847, comprise bills for military fines, certificates, commissions, correspondence, orders, muster rolls, officer rolls, and receipts. Stickley's personal correspondence, 1829-1855, mainly concerns Stickley family matters and family health, politics, and business practices. There is also a list, 1841, of the members and equipment of the Strasburg Fire Company and a list, 1833-1834, of the members of the Woodstock Fire Company. Also included and of unknown relation to the Stickley papers are some letters and business records, 1853-1870, of Baltimore merchants John W. Massie and Massie, Bell and Goodloe; an ACCOUNT OF THE VALLEY CAMPAIGN OF 1862 by George W. Kurtz; and the Civil War prison diary kept by Confederate Lieutenant Richard L. Gray while incarcerated at Johnson's Island, Ohio
