Papers, 1826-1872, of Chauncey Goodrich Griswold (1802-1883) of Richmond, Virginia, consisting of addresses, bonds, correspondence, and notes concerning cases in which Griswold is involved as an attorney; his legal opinions on various cases; Virginia politics, including the 1840 and 1844 presidential elections; political parties; the hire of slaves; and family and social news. Addresses include speeches on the value of debating societies and on the grand jury. Correspondence also contains letters from J. G. Griswold to his parents Chauncey and Julia Griswold (b. ca. 1818) concerning his business career, his wife's health, his grief after her death, and his position at the University of Alabama; a letter from Griswold to his wife regarding his stay in Havana, Cuba; and two letters, ca. 1842, from R. M. T. Hunter (1809-1887) concerning his political positions and whether he will run again for Congress
