Papers cover Maury's business concerns in Virginia and West Virginia lands, real estate, coal, and railroads; his financial dealings in stocks and bonds for his company, his clients, and his relatives; banking matters including the lending of money and the collection and payment of debts; and his and his firm's involvement in court cases and estate settlements. Correspondents include several members of the Maury family, including Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873)

Biographical or historical data
Robert Henry Maury was born 2 October 1816 in Caroline County, Virginia, to William Grymes Maury (1784-1860) and Anne Hoomes Woolfolk Maury. Maury eventually settled in Richmond, Virginia, and started a banking and brokerage firm with his brother James L. Maury called R. H. Maury and Company. During the Civil War, Maury served as a member of the ambulance committee. During and after the war, Maury continued his business, becoming one of the most successful firms in Richmond. Maury married Sarah Ann Wortham (1817-1846) 17 December 1840, and they had three children. He married second Martha Bickerton Greenhow (1820-1909) 19 December 1849, and they had five children. Maury died 10 October 1886 in Richmond, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
