Summary
Papers, 1778-1840, of Robert Hill of Richmond, Virginia, consisting of accounts, letters, and receipts. Collection is divided into two series. Series I: Baylor Hill papers, 1778-1803, consists of the papers of Baylor Hill (1760-1805) of Norfolk, Virginia, containing accounts and receipts for food, forage, equipment, and supplies while Hill was an officer in the United States Continental Army Light Dragoons and receipts and accounts for items while living in Norfolk, also containing correspondence concerning taxes on land owned in Kentucky, purchase of land in Ohio, and military land warrants. Series II: Robert Hill papers, 1809-1840, consists mainly of correspondence to Robert Hill as part of Hill and Dabney and Robert Hill and Company, merchants in Richmond, Virginia. Correspondence concerns wheat and corn trade, bill collecting, and the hiring of slaves. Hill's correspondence and business matters ranged from King William, King and Queen, Caroline, Goochland, Powhatan, Albemarle, Hanover, and Stafford Counties, Virginia, to Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia

Biographical or historical data
Baylor Hill (1760-1805) was the son of Humphrey Hill (d. 1775) of King William County, Virginia. He served as an officer in the United States Continental Army Light Dragoons during the American Revolution. He settled in Norfolk, Virginia, after the war. Robert Hill was Baylor Hill's grandson. He was a commission merchant in Richmond, Virginia, during the 1830s as a partner in Hill and Dabney and in Robert Hill and Company.
