Biographical or historical data
St. John's United Church of Christ of Harrisville, Shenandoah County, Virginia traces its beginning to Frieden's Lutheran and German Reformed Church, erected in Shenandoah County in 1824 and used jointly by the Lutheran and Reformed congregations. Both congregations continued to share a church until 1868. At a meeting held at Frieden's Church in October 1868, the Reformed congregations of Frieden's Church and also Brook Union Church unanimously agreed to merge. Land was purchased and a new church, named St. John's Chapel, was dedicated on 23 July 1876. In the fall of 1899, St. John's Chapel was remodeled and re-dedicated on 7 January 1900 as St. John's Reformed Church. Sometime in early 1957, the name changed to St. John's United Church of Christ because of the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed, the Congregational, and the Christian congregations.
