Records, 1784-1806, of Freeland and Gillies, merchants with general stores located in Petersburg and Manchester, Virginia. Consists of accounts and invoices, 1784-1795, with various merchants in Great Britain but principally with Heron, Lenox and Company in London; a customer account book, 1789-1797, noting daily sales and purchases; correspondence, 1789-1802, principally exchanged between Freeland and Gillies, including Archibald Freeland, James Freeland, and William Gillies, and Heron, Lenox and Company; and court documents, 1788-1806, including accounts, concerning the chancery cause between Heron, Lenox and Company, plaintiffs, and Archibald Freeland, defendant. Accounts and account books contain entries for sales, purchases and shipments of flour, bread, coal, salt, and tobacco. Correspondence chiefly concerns business matters including prices of goods, shipments, sales of goods, and debts
