Records, 1723-1851, of the Principio Company of Maryland. Most of the correspondence is for the years 1768 and 1769 and is addressed to the Principio Company offices in London. Correspondents include William Baxter, William Chetwynd, Nathaniel Martin, Francis Phillips, and Thomas Russell. Subjects discussed concern the financial affairs of the company and operation and production at Principio furnaces. Also included are a transcript of articles of agreement between the company and Augustine Washington, a transcript of an article from the New England Genealogical and Antiquarian Register, 1851, describing Augustine Washington, and pages from a company ledger for 1768-1769 containing references to Augustine Washington. Also includes "Orders and Regulations for the better managing and carrying on the Company's affairs," 1727

The Principo Company was an association of British ironmasters, merchants, and capitalists engaged in the manufacture of pig and bar iron in Maryland and Virginia. As early as 1715, the company was operating an ironworks in Cecil County, Maryland. most prominently connected with the company were Sir Nicholas Hackell Carew, Thomas Russell and his sons William and Thomas, Stephen Onion, John England, William Chetwynd, and Augustine and Lawrence Washington.
