Papers, 1863-1865, of the Canfield family of Ohio consisting of letters sent to family members from Dennis Canfield (1814-1893) and his sons Clark Canfield (1847-1922) and Fernando Sly (ca. 1842-1863) while they were serving in the 123rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Correspondence principally sent from Winchester, Virginia, and Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland, but also from other camps in western Virginia. Concerns military life, duties of musicians in the army, and family matters. Includes both the originals and transcript copies of the letters. Also includes genealogical notes for the Canfield family

Biographical or historical data
Dennis K. Canfield was born 19 September 1814 in Vermont. He died 7 January 1893 in Norwalk, Ohio. He married first Maryette White and second Catherine Sly in Erie County, New York. Dennis Canfield enlisted in Company C, 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a fifer. Clark Canfield, the son of Dennis and Catherine Sly Canfield (1821-1915), was born on 26 October 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He enlisted as a drummer boy in Company C, 123rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. After the war, he married Orpha Bartlett (1849-1939) on 21 February 1867. He died in 24 November 1922. Fernando "Fritz" Sly was born circa 1842 and died at Martinsburg, West Virginia, on 20 June 1863.
