Biographical or historical data
Robert William Hughes was born 6 June 1821 in Powhatan County, Virginia, to Jesse Hughes (1788-1822) and Elizabeth Woodson Morton Hughes (1793-1822). He attended Caldwell Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina. Hughes was a tutor from 1840 to 1843 at Bingham's High School in Hillsboro (Hillsborough), North Carolina. Hughes studied law and practiced in Richmond, Virginia, from 1846 to 1853. He became editor of the Richmond EXAMINER from 1850 to 1857 and from 1861 to 1865, and edited the Richmond REPUBLIC from 1865 to 1866. Hughes edited the Richmond STATE JOURNAL from 1869 to 1870. Hughes became a Republican by the end of the Civil War and this helped him be appointed United States attorney for the western district of Virginia, a position he held from 1870 to 1873. In 1873, Hughes was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for governor, but was appointed judge of the United States District Court, Eastern District of Virginia in 1874 and held that position until 1898. Hughes married Eliza M. Johnston (1825-1906) 4 June 1850, and they had three children. Hughes died 10 December 1901 in Abingdon, Virginia, and was buried in Sinking Spring Cemetery.
