Sketch books, ca. 1846-1871, of Lewis Miller (1796-1882) of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and New York. Volume one of these sketch books, titled on page 6 "Orbis Pictus Lewis Miller A Picturesque Album to the Ladies of York, Pennsylvania," is dated 1849 and consists of 146 pages of sketches with writings in English, German, and Latin. The sketches illustrate poetry, songs, and Biblical passages, and consist of American patriotic symbols, trees, flowers, herbs, animals and a few scenes of areas in Virginia. Volume two of these sketch books, titled on page 7 "Lewis Millers Sketch Book of Landscapes's in the State of Virginia" is dated ca. 1846-1871 and consists of 93 pages of sketches of primarily Virginia scenes. The majority of the volume portrays Miller's observations and travels in the vicinity of Christiansburg in Montgomery County, and to a lesser extent, the whole area between the counties of Rockbridge and Wythe. Other Virginia scenes include Harpers Ferry, Bedford, Lynchburg, Farmville, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Mount Vernon, and Alexandria. In addition to Virginia scenes, this volume contains a drawing of Washington, D.C., showing the Washington Monument under construction, and on pages 63-93, various European scenes

Biographical or historical data
Lewis Miller was born in York, Pennsylvania on 3 May 1796. He traveled widely but lived the majority of his life in York. Although a carpenter by trade, Miller sketched over 2,000 drawings during his life. The last twenty years of his life were spent in Christiansburg, Virginia, living with relatives in the Craig homestead. He died in Christiansburg on 15 September 1882 and buried in the Craig family cemetery.
