Biographical or historical data
John Henry Guy was born in 1831 in Louisa County, Virginia, to Samuel Atwell Guy (1802-1852) and [Amanda M.?] Guy (1814-1857). He moved with his family to Goochland County, Virginia, where they lived at "Contention." Guy graduated from Randolph-Macon College and studied law. He was admitted to the bar and began practicing in Goochland County. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in an artillery company. Guy was captured at the surrender of Fort Donelson, and imprisoned for eight months. Upon his release, he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel and commanded troops below Richmond, Virginia. In 1863, Guy was elected to represent Fluvanna, Goochland, and Louisa Counties in the Virginia State Senate, and served one term which ended in 1865. After the war, Guy moved to Richmond about 1867 and continued his practice of law. He represented Richmond and Henrico County in the House of Delegates from 1869 to 1871. Guy married Mary Ranson (1849-1933) 12 October 1871, and they had at least five children. Guy died in Richmond 16 June 1890 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
