- The American Colonization Society was formed in 1816 to send free African-Americans to Africa as an alternative to emancipation in the United States. In 1822, the society established on the west coast of Africa a colony that in 1847 became the independent nation of Liberia. By 1867, the society had sent more than 13,000 emigrants. Beginning in the 1830s, the society was harshly attacked by abolitionists, who tried to discredit colonization as a slaveholder's scheme. After the Civil War, when many blacks wanted to go to Liberia, financial support for colonization had waned. During its later years the society focussed on educational and missionary efforts in Liberia rather than emigration. Ultimately, the group attempted to satisfy two groups in America. One group consisted of philanthropists, clergy and abolitionists who wanted to free African slaves and allow them the opportunity to return to Africa. The other group comprised slave owners who feared free blacks and wanted to remove them from America.
- Traverse Daniel Herndon was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, on 11 March 1810, the son of John Chapman and Alice Nutt Herndon. He married Louisa Hale Love on 1 November 1838 in Fauquier County. Herndon like three of his brothers became a Baptist minister. He preached at Long Branch Baptist Church in Fauquier County and also was one of the organizing elders of the Front Royal Missionary Baptist Church in 1839. He died on 10 September 1854 in Fauquier County.
