Biographical or historical data
St. Paul's, said to be the oldest Lutheran Church in that area of Virginia which became Shenandoah County, is believed to trace its origin to the ministry of John Caspar Stoever, Jr., prior to 1747. Although referred to as having been both Reformed and Lutheran in its early days, the church was definitely Lutheran by 1769 when a log church was erected. A brick church was dedicated on 1844. During the Civil War, the church was used a a hospital, arsenal, and horse stable. In 1867, the church was repaired and redicated.
