Summary
Transcripts of letters, 1780-1783, from Edmund Pendleton (1721-1803) of Caroline County, Virginia, to James Madison (1751-1836) serving in the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, concerning the Revolutionary War, especially campaigns in Virginia and the southern colonies, as well as the war's aftermath. Pendleton comments on the fighting in Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina; conflicts between the British and French navies; the support of the French army; the Virginia legislature; and the Continental Congress. He asks Madison for news from Congress and from other places. Pendleton also discusses the political situation in Great Britain. Several of Pendleton's letters discuss the operation of the new government under the Articles of Confederation, and plans for a bank. He comments on efforts by the Maryland and Rhode Island delegations in Congress to block measures supported by the other states. Also of interest are the proceedings of a case before the Virginia Court of Appeals concerning three men accused of treason who are seeking pardons
