  • This group of correspondence includes only extracts of the papers selected by Francis L. Berkeley Jr. in 1954 from over 100 vols. housed in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. The letter relate to the Glasgow-Virginia tobacco trade and cover the period before and during the Revolutionary War
  • There are two outgoing letterbooks (1725-1730 and 1729-1742) of the Glasgow merchant George Bogle, including numerous letters to his brother Matthew Bogle, factor for the company Bogle and Scott in Falmouth, Virginia, to Matthew's successor, Capt. Newman Brockenbrough, and to other successors, Robert and John Bogle (George Bogle's sons). Other correspondents include, among others, John Carstairs, William Dunlop, Samuel Bowman, Nehemiah Champion, Arthur Hamilton, and John Graves
  • The letters dated 1696-1781 are from Matthew Bogle expressing his dissatisfaction with the law requiring inspection of tobacco at state warehouses, as well as letters to and from the Bogle family of Virginia and Glasgow; also, there are seven pages of extracts taken from the J. Brown journal (1766, 1774, 1777), including comments on the Stamp Act crisis

Biographical or historical data
George Bogle (d. 1784) a merchant of Glasgow, Scotland, his brother Matthew and sons Robert (d. 1786) and John Bogle (d. 1802) were partners in the firm Bogle and Scott of Glasgow, Scotland, and Falmouth, Virginia. In the 1770's the firm also had a London office.
