Summary
Letters, 1866-1870, from Virginia Alverta Duncan Kitzmiller (1841-1896) of Sinking Creek, Tennessee, to her brother William Duett Duncan (1844-1871) of Rappahannock County, Virginia. Each letter consists of a manuscript and typed transcript. In the letters dated 1866 April 20 and 1867 May 7, Virginia spoke of the tense relationship that had developed between the Union soldiers and local farmers in Tennessee after the Civil War. She mentioned a number of confrontations between the two groups, and spoke of the Union men's desire, "to drive every rebel out of E. Tennessee." In the letters dated 1867 September 8 and 1870 September 25, she wrote about her family, drought, and crop prices. The collection also includes some sparse genealogical information on William Duett Duncan
