In 1726, Baylor established his home at Newmarket in Caroline County. and became a prominent citizen of the county. He served as senior warden of his parish, and as a county justice. Baylor also served as colonel of the Caroline militia. From 1742 to 1752 and from 1756 to 1765, he represented Caroline County in the House of Burgesses. Baylor was also an ardent horseman and he imported Fearnought, considered the best breeding stallion brought to colonial America. He operated a large-scale stable. Baylor married Frances Walker (d. 1783) of Yorktown 2 January 1744 and they had 12 children. Baylor died 3 April 1772 at Newmarket, Caroline County.
