- Letter, dated 30 [July?] 1772, from Ambrose Rucker (ca. 1725-1807) of Amherst County, Virginia, to Patrick Henry (1736-1799) concerning the validity of his claim to certain lands. Henry may have been acting as Rucker's attorney in this land dispute
- Biographical or historical data
- Ambrose Rucker was born about 1725 in Orange County, Virginia. He moved to Amherst County, Virginia, where he became a prominent land owner, a county justice, and an officer in the county militia. Rucker served in the French and Indian War and in the Revolution. His militia unit may have been at Yorktown when the British surrendered. Rucker was a member of the Committee of Safety for Amherst County during 1775. After the Revolution, he was a member of the House of Delegates from 1781-1782. Rucker married first Mary Headly and second Mary Tinsley (d. 1818). He and his second wife had 14 children. Rucker died by 21 December 1807 when his will was probated in Amherst County court.
