Tazewell received much of his education from his grandfather Benjamin Waller (1716-1786), John Wickham (1763-1839), and George Wythe (1726-1806). He received his B.A. from the College of William & Mary in 1792. Tazewell studied law with Wickham and was admitted to the bar 14 May 1796. He served as a member of the House of Delegates for James City County, Virginia, from 1798 to 1801, and was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1800 to 1801. In 1802, Tazewell moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where he practiced law and married Ann Stratton Nivison (1785-1858) 15 July 1802. He returned to the House of Delegates as a member from Norfolk from 1804 to 1806 and from 1816-1817. Elected to the United States Senate, he served from 1824 to 1832. Two years later, he was elected governor, a position he held from 1834 to 1836. He resigned from the governorship and devoted his life to his private affairs. Littleton and Ann Tazewell had seven children. Tazewell died 6 May 1860 in Norfolk, Virginia. Buried at his Eastern Shore plantation, his body was reinterred in Norfolk's Elmwood Cemetery in 1866.
