- Biographical or historical data
- William Cabell was born 13 March 1730 in Goochland County, Virginia, to Dr. William Cabell (1700-1774) and Elizabeth Burks Cabell (d. 1756). Cabell was probably educated at home before possibly attending the College of William and Mary. Cabell represented Albemarle County, Virginia, in the House of Burgesses from either 1756 or 1758 to 1761. When Amherst County was formed from Albemarle County in 1761, Cabell was returned to the House of Burgesses as its first representative. He represented the County in the House of Burgesses until the American Revolution, then served in the Virginia Conventions, before being elected to the new Virginia Senate where he served from 1776 to 1781. Cabell was elected to the House of Delegates in 1781 and served until 1788. He was a member of the ratifying convention for the federal Constitution, voting against ratification. Cabell was a trustee of Hampden-Sydney College, and director of the James River Company from 1785 to 1791. Cabell married Margaret Jordan (d. 1812) in 1756, and they had seven children. Cabell died at Union Hill in Amherst County 23 March 1798.
