The material relating to politics emphasizes the political activities in the Eighth and Tenth Congressional Districts of northern Virginia and the efforts of straight-ticket Democrats to defeat the conservative Democratic Byrd Organization in the decades following World War II. Recounts the successful efforts of straight-ticket Democrats to nominate Lyndon B. Johnson for president at the 1964 state Democratic convention and the defeat of Judge Howard W. Smith by George Rawlings in the 1966 Democratic primary. Includes a chronology of Johnson's life and Virginia politics, a memoir entitled, "Breaking the Byrd Grip," a how-to guide on grass roots politics, and an inventory of his personal and political papers located at the Fairfax County Public Library, in Fairfax, Virginia

- Born 1914 in Covington, Ky. Served in the Coastal Artillery from 1931 to 1941. Graduated with a degree in mathematics from George Washington University (GWU) in 1946. Earned an AM from GWU in 1948 and joined Robert College in Turkey as a professor of Physics. In 1948, married Constantia Homman in Istanbul. Returned to the United States in 1951 and moved to Springfield, Virginia in 1952. Participated actively in Virginia politics as a member of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee. Served as John F. Kennedy's campaign coordinator in the Tenth Congressional District in 1960 and ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representative against Republican incumbent Joel T. Broyhill in 1962 and 1964.
