- Alexander Whitaker, "the Apostle to Virginia," was born at Cambridge, England, in 1585 and came to Virginia as a Episcopalian missionary in 1611. He preached at Henrico in 1612 and lived at Rock Hall on the south side of the James River in present-day Chesterfield County. He drowned in 1617. Unsubstantiated accounts claim Whitaker baptised and married Pocahontas.
