- Letter, 9 December 1858, from John Daniel Imboden, Staunton, Virginia, regarding the settlement of Peter Cail's (d. 1815) estate. Also includes a transcript of the letter
- Biographical or historical data
- John Daniel Imboden (1823-1895) was born near Staunton, Virginia. He was a lawyer and served two terms in the Virginia legislature. He served during the Civil War, attaining the rank of brigadier general. His most famous campaign was from April-May 1863 when he destroyed railroad bridges and collected horses and cattle for the Confederacy. After the war he settled in Richmond and practiced law. Later he moved to Washington County, Virginia, where he helped develop the coal mining industry in the area. In the process, he founded the town of Damascus. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
