- Biographical or historical data
- Ely Samuel Parker (1828-1895), of New York, was a Seneca Indian, Union officer, and close friend of Ulysses Grant. When the war started he was unable to get a military commission from the governor of New York because he was Native American. It was not until 1863 that he was appointed J.E. Smith's division engineer. From 30 Aug. 1864 to 25 July 1866 Parker served as Grant's military secretary, and as Grant's A.D.C. from 1866-1869. Parker then served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
