- Will, dated 6 May 1697 and recorded 8 December 1697, of Martha Hayward (d. 1697) of Stafford County, Virginia. Also includes a transcript copy of the will. The will book which contains this document is no longer extant. A note on the transcript states that the photocopy was made from the Washington family papers at the Library of Congress
- Biographical or historical data
- Born in England, Martha Hayward came to Virginia about 1677, using money left to her by her brother John Washington (1634-1677). She married Samuel Hayward (d. 1696) who was the clerk of the Stafford County court and who represented Stafford County, Virginia, in the House of Burgesses in 1685-1686. Martha Hayward died by 8 December 1697.
