- Letters, 16 May and 5 June 1864, written by Albert R. Whitney (1840-1864), while being held prisoner of war in Richmond, to his wife Sarah. He writes about his own welfare, and mentions that he expects to be sent to Georgia with others

- Albert Russell Whitney was born in Almond, Allegany County, New York on 17 September 1840. He was the son of Rufus Whitney and Laura Pickett. He enlisted on 11 August 1862, and served with the 1st New York Dragoons. He was taken prisoner on 7 May 1864, and was sent to Richmond, then Andersonville Prison in Georgia, and finally to Camp Lawton, near Millen, Georgia. He died there on 5 November 1864. In 1868, his remains, along with those of other prisoners, were reinterred at Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina.
