- Letter, 8 July 1861, from an unidentified soldier in the 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company A, to his father. At the time of writing, the soldier's unit was encamped on a hill near Alexandria, Virginia. He wrote of their recent march from Washington, D.C., and of his time on guard duty; rumors of impending attacks by Confederate soldiers on Union pickets; hearing remarks by President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) and various government and military officials on 4 July 1861; and the anticipation of an upcoming offensive after the arrival of additional regiments
