- Biographical or historical data
- Richardson Leonard Henley was born in James City County, Virginia on 27 July 1836. He graduated from Bethany College in West Virginia in 1854, and received his law degree from Washington College. When the Civil War began, Henley enlisted in Company C, 32nd Virginia Infantry. In 1862, he was promoted to captain, and was wounded three times at the battle of Antietam. After the war, Henley practiced law in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1870, he was elected judge of York and James City Counties and Williamsburg. In 1880, he was elected to finish an unexpired term for the Warwick and Elizabeth City Counties, Virginia, courts. In 1883, Henley was elected a judge for the 8th judicial circuit. In 1892, he was appointed to the State Board of Agriculture. Henley married Ida Dudley Spencer 11 December 1867, and they had ten or eleven children. Henley died on 25 May 1897 in Williamsburg and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
