- Henry Knox (1750-1806) served in the Massachusetts militia during the early days of the American Revolution. In 1775 he was appointed colonel of the Continental regiment of artillery by George Washington. He was promoted to the rank of major general and succeeded Washington as Commander-in-Chief in December 1783.
