- Biographical or historical data
- James Wood was born 28 January 1741 in Frederick County, Virginia. He was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1766 and served until 1775, He also served in the 1st (1774) and 5th (1776) Virginia Conventions. Woods was elected to the House of Delegates and served in 1776 and 1784-1785. He was appointed captain of the Frederick County militia in 1774, and colonel of the 8th Virginia Regiment in 1776. Wood was promoted to brigadier general of the state militia in 1783. Appointed to the state executive council in 1784, he was elected governor of Virginia, serving from 1796 to 1799. After his term as governor, Wood returned to the executive council where he served until his death 16 June 1813. He married Jean Moncure (1753-1823) in 1775, and they had one daughter who died young.
