- John Tayloe was born 8 May 1721 and was educated in England. He was the builder of Mount Airy, a signer of the Treaty of Lancaster (1744), a member of the Ohio Company, and a trustee of the town of Dumfries in Prince William County. On 11 July 1747, he married Rebecca Plater of Maryland in Middlesex County, Virginia. In 1757 Tayloe was appointed to the Colonial Council under Lord Governor John Dunmore and upon the reorganization of the state government was elected to the first Council of State under Governor Patrick Henry. He resigned on 9 October 1776 and died 19 April 1779 leaving behind his wife and nine children.
